Massage (Abhyanga)

Massage - An Easy Way to Stay Healthy
Massage (Abhyanga) is a type of passive exercise. It is especially good for weak people, who are unable to exercise. Regular massage is the key to good health, and is necessary both for prevention and cure of diseases. An Easy Way to Stay HealthyOil massage is the most common type of massage. Oil should be chosen according to the season and the personal constitution. Sesame oil is the best for massaging according to Ayurveda. In the winter one can also use mustard oil, though it should not be used in summer. However, those in the habit of constant internal use of mustard oil can massage with it in all seasons. Coconut oil and sunflower oil are also good for massaging in hot climate. Olive oil can be used in the winter as it is heating in nature. People with a vata type of body should use warming oils, and those with pitta type will benefit from cooling oils. The kapha types should have dry massage or should use mustard oil after warming. In order to determine what type you are take a constitution test. Method of MassagingOne can either start massage from the feet or from head. In self massage one generally starts from feet, then the legs, hands, abdomen, back, chest, neck, shoulders, face and head. While receiving massage from some one it is generally started from head. There are no specific reasons for this. First apply the oil on the part which is to be massaged. Then massage the part gently with palms till the oil penetrates the body. When massaging, upward strokes should be employed. The motion should be uniform (not too fast and not too slow) and pressure should be applied only on the muscles, not the bones. Different types of actions of fingers and hands are used for massaging different organs. One should receive a massage on an empty stomach. The best time for massaging is early morning or evening. One may wash the oil off after massage. Wait for 20-30 minutes before washing. There should be no anxiety, stress, anger, and worry. The person should concentrate fully on the part being massaged. It is better to get massage from an expert but you can do it yourself too. One should avoid taking a massage when there is too much mucus in the body (aggravation of Kapha), when suffering from fever, and after one has undertaken cleansing therapies like vomiting (emesis) and purgation. Benefits of MassageMassage stimulates the internal functions of the body and provides nourishment to various body tissues. It helps in cleansing the toxins from channels. Massaging with oil provides lubrication to various body mechanisms. It stimulates the different agni (enzymes), increases assimilation of food and increases the vital body fluid called the Ojas. It works at both mental and physical levels of the body. It is beneficial in the case of insomnia, weakness of nerves, laziness, exhaustion, general debility, dry and unhealthy skin.

Principles of Ayurved

Principles of Ayurved

Ayurveda is a holistic healing science which comprises of two words, Ayu and Veda. Ayu means life and Veda means knowledge or science. So the literal meaning of the word Ayurveda is the science of life. Ayurveda is a science dealing not only with treatment of some diseases but is a complete way of life.
Ayurveda aims at making a happy, healthy and peaceful society
The two most important aims of Ayurveda are:
+ To maintain the health of healthy people
+ To cure the diseases of sick people
A Person is seen in Ayurveda as a unique individual made up of five primary elements. These elements are ether (space), air, fire, water and earth. Just as in nature, we too have these five elements in us. When any of these elements are imbalanced in the environment , they will in turn have an influence on us. The foods we eat and the weather are just two examples of the influence of these elements . While we are a composite of these five primary elements, certain elements are seen to have an ability to combine to create various physiological functions. The elements combine with Ether and Air in dominence to form what is known in Ayurveda as Vata Dosha. Vata governs the principle of movement and therefore can be seen as the force which directs nerve impulses, circulation, respiration and elemination etc.,The elements with Fire and Water in dominence combine to form the Pitta Dosha . The Pitta Dosha is responsible for the process of transformation or metabolism. The transformation of foods into nutrients that our bodies can assimilate is an example of a Pitta function. Pitta is also responsible for metabolism in the organ and tissue systems as well as cellular metabolism. Finally, it is predominantly the water and earth elements which combine to form the Kapha Dosha. Kapha is responsible for growth, adding structure unit by unit. It also offers protection , for example, in form of the cerebral-spinal fluid, which protects the brain and spinal column. The mucousal lining of the stomach is another example of the function of Kapha Dosha protecting the tissues.

We are all made up of unique proportions of Vata,Pitta and Kapha. These ratios of the Doshas vary in each individual and because of this Ayurveda sees each person as a special mixture that accounts for our diversity.Ayurveda gives us a model to look at each individual as a unique makeup of the three doshas and to thereby design treatment protocols that specifically address a persons health challenges. When any of the doshas become accumulated, Ayurveda will suggest specific lifestyle and nutritional guidelines to assist the individual in reducing the dosha that has become excessive. Also herbal medicines will be suggested , to cure the imbalance and the disease.Understanding this main principle of Ayurveda , it offers us an explanation as to why one person responds differently to a treatment or diet than another and why persons with the same disease might yet require different treatments and medications.
Other important basic principles of Ayurveda which are briefly mentioned here are:
Dhatus- These are the basic tissues which maintain and nourish the body. They are seven in number namely- rasa(chyle), raktha(blood), mamsa(muscles),meda(fatty tissue), asthi(bone), majja(marrow) and sukla(reprodutive tissue). Proper amount of each dhatu and their balanced function is very important for good health.
Mala- These are the waste materials produced as a result of various metabolic activities in the body. They are mainly urine, feaces, sweat etc. Proper elimination of the malas is equally important for good health. Accumulation of malas causes many diseases in the body.
Srotas- These are different types of channels which are responsible for transportation of food, dhatus, malas and doshas. Proper functioning of srotas is necessary for transporting different materials to the site of their requirement. Blockage of srotas causes many diseases.
Agni- These are different types of enzymes responsible for digestion and transforming one material to another.
All these factors should function in a proper balance for good health. They are inter-related and are directly or indirectly responsible for maintaining equilibrium of the tridoshas.
Balance and Harmony of the Three DoshasWhen the three Doshas are well harmonised and function in a balanced manner, it results in good nourishment and well-being of the individual . But when there is imbalance or disharmony within or between them, it will result in elemental imbalance , leading to various kinds of ailments. The Ayurvedic concept of physical health revolves round these three Doshas and its primary purpose is to help maintain them in a balanced state and thus to prevent disease. This humoral theory is not unique to the ancient Indian Medicine : The Yin and Yang theory in chinese medicine and the Hippocratic theory of four humours in Greek medicine are also very similar.

The Qualities of the Three DoshasThe three Doshas possess qualities and their increase or decrease in the system depends upon the similar or antagonistic qualities of everything ingested.Vata is : dry, cold, light, mobile, clear, rough, subtlePitta is : slightly oily, hot, intense, light, fluid, free flowing, foul smelling.Kapha is: oily, cold, heavy, stable, viscid, smooth, soft Both Vata and Pitta are light and only Kapha is heavy. Both Vata and Kapha are cold and only Pitta is hot. Both Pitta and Kapha are moist and oily and only Vata is dry.

Anything dry almost always increases Vata , anything hot increases Pitta and anything heavy , Kapha.Puffed rice is dry, cold light and rough - overindulgence in puffed rice therefore is likely to increase Vata in the overindulger.Mustard oil is oily , hot , intense , fluid , strong-smelling and liquid and increases Pitta in the consumer.Yoghurt , which , being creamy, cold, heavy, viscid, smooth and soft , is the very image of Kapha , adds to the body's Kapha when eaten. All Five elemets , as expressed through Vata, Pitta and Kapha , are essential to life, working together to create health or produce disease. No one dosha can produce or sustain life - all three must work together , each in its own way.

Prakruti your body type

Prakruti your body type
You have noticed it many times-
Your Dad, mother and your younger sister and you yourself, all have different natures, different tendencies, and different responses towards a same situation.
You hardly suffer from cold and your sister usually does.
Temper of your father is high and yours one is low to bottom.
Your mother loves to stay in cold and your father in hot environment. There are too many differences that list will be too long to discuss. This is not only with you and me. Every family is having same different characters with it. You all stay in same environment and eat same foods!! Then why these differences are there? Answer lies in the concept of Prakruti; let's understand Prakruti.
Understand the Prakruti
Three-fold system of Prakruti
Panchamahabautic Prakruti
TriGunaj Prakruti
Tri-Doshic Prakruti
What Decides Your Prakruti

Understand the Prakruti
Recall some Kate, Peter and Virginia they came to meet you sometime before. Kate came and knocked the door slightly and waited for you for two or three minutes and even you were late to open the door, he was just cool and calm. And Peter!!! Oh my God! He pushed the bell hard and when you were late he shouted on you badly as if you have done something punishable even though you were busy inside; it never matters to him!! The third one ……..yaps! The Virginia!! She came and rang the bell some five to ten times in a short time. And if by chance you were late she was in your lawns, was plucking the leaves of plants there. The thing which made them to react differently is their body type. Each one of us is one out of Kate, Peter and Virginia!!!Kate Peter and Virginia these are three different persons with their own peculiarities with them. They got these peculiarities by birth. They are of same species, same race even then they are different from each other. Basically each of them is having same chromosomal configuration of 23 pairs or in Ayurvedic language the same Panchmahabhootas, TriGunas and Tridoshas. These three components together decide Prakruti of ours.
Three-fold system of Prakruti
Prakruti is a result of interaction between Panchmahabhootas, Trigunas and Tri- Doshas. So Prakruti is also of three types.
According to Panchmahabhootas- Five types according to the dominancy of a Mahabhoota in the body.
According to TriGunas- Sixteen types, seven from Sattva and six because of involvement of Rajas and three from Tamas.
According to Tri-Doshas- Seven types.
Panchamahabautic Prakruti
Prakruti dominated by Akash (Space)
Prakruti dominated by Vayu (Air)
Prakruti dominated by Agni (Fire)
Prakruti dominated by Jala (Water)
Prakruti dominated by Prithvi If you are dominated by Akash, you need to feel the gaps caused by it and if Agni Mahabhoota is profuse in one’s body, he needs coolness of water and Prithvi to calm it. So by knowing this composition, you can find what kind of food can help building your body weight or can help to reduce weight.
TriGunaj Prakruti
These universal energies control Psyche of each and every cell of our body and help to make decision by body. Where these energies lost their consciousness and harmony in between these three, body starts to think in an erroneous way. Depression, anxiety and psychosis all are consequences of disturbance. By knowing this Prakruti, one can understand how to interact with external environment to make inner environment healthy. These are of three types mainly and then subdivided in sixteen:
Satvika individuals are usually noble and spiritual in character, their nature determined as much by body type as their star constellation. Satvika Subtype Qualities are:
Brahma
Arsa
Aindra
Yamya
Varuna
Kubera
Gandharva Rajasikas are vulnerable to temptations, are very human in their character and approach to life:-
Asura
Raksasa
Paisaca
Sarpa
Praita
Sakuna A dominant Vata ensures that Tamasika individuals are the most down to earth, concerned about fundamental questions of practical existence, specially when confronted by more spiritual and less physical issues.:-
Pasava
Matsya
Banaspatya
Tri-Doshic Prakruti
Kate has a tendency to use minimum of energy. She tends to store it. Irritation on different stimuli can cause energy consumption and will result in nothing. This means, he is just cool, calm, and smooth like Kapha. He needs a food that can just fulfill his energy requirement. Even few bucks of extra energies will lead him to blockage in his arteries, dump body, diabetes, over weight and many more bad conditions. Peter needs more energy to expend. He is sharp enough. He will have to be controlled by cool and calm food i.e. what is harmful for Kate will be useful for Peter. And he is just like a bike of low average and good pick up. His anger should be cooled by special Yogic exercises. Last one Virginianeeds the extra energy as she wastes too much in minimum works. She can't stand at a place if she is not offered few bucks for this purpose. She is always in hurry. So she needs to be tackled by a mixture of diet and routine of above two. Less food will lead her to deficiencies and extra will lead her to a fatty body. Besides these three body types there are also the body types which have the traits of two of these. So seven Doshic Prakrutis are:
Vata Prakruti
Pitta Prakruti
Kapha Prakruti
Vata-Pitta Prakruti
Pitta-Kapha Prakruti
Kapha-Vata Prakruti
Vata-Pitta-Kapha Prakruti
WHAT DECIDES PRAKRUTI
Following are the factors which decide the Prakruti of all of us. It all happens during the in uterine life.
Prakruti of the parents
Dosha status of mother and father according to age and time, when they are planning a new baby.
Food habits and daily routine of parents before conceiving of new life
Time, place and conditions in which fertilization between ovum and sperm occurs
Food habits of mother during Pregnancy period
Daily routine of mother when baby is growing What gets deciced before birth will remain same throughout the life. We can only find the way to cop up with the Prakruti of ours.If your parents had knowledge about this and they had surely planned you for complete health. They didn’t have this. When, you had this opportunity, why to miss this great opportunity. We are here to help you… Plan Prakruti of Your Baby.

Holistic health

Holistic health
Ayurveda ‘the Science of Life’ is a holistic system of medicine from India, which evolved from Brahma sages of Ancient India. The principles and philosophy of Ayurveda view man as an intricate whole, together with our external and internal environments. The doctrines are derived from universal laws of nature that have not changed a little through time. With subjective, objective, and intuitive approaches to gaining knowledge, incorporated with a deep understanding of the unseen intelligence of the universe, the practices of Ayurveda have withstood the test of time.Holistic health is a philosophy of complete health. This approach has different attitudes, these are –
Considers man as a whole, comprising body, mind (Psycho) and Consciousness (Spirit).
Beside this subtle approach, they took the whole body as a subjective matter not objective. All systems and organs are interrelated with each other. Here specialization is approached to the complete body not to its parts.
It has another approach, beyond an individual. An individual is thought in the context of universe. Universe and an individual are just same to each other. Man is a unit of universe. After looking at these concepts, it becomes clear that Ayurveda falls in the same category. Ayurveda covers all these points completely.Holistic health: Need of time
Today, the problems we are facing are less physical and more psychological. Cases in medicinal world are changing very quickly. Anti-biotic drugs are no more life saving drugs. Man is dying more due to heart failures, diabetes and neuropathies. We have better ways of sanitation, we are more civilized yet we are more ill? We have found all the ways to be happy in the name of comfort but we have lost the real zest of life in this run of time. We are able to regulate the temperature inside our rooms but we don’t know how to save our own earth from hard sun rays or how to find a solution of deadly sun rays, which are killing us in the name of skin cancers! Glaciers are melting day by day, we are able to freeze the things in our houses but not able to save the glaciers. We have upset the nature and now nature is rebelling to us. We will have to pay for all our deeds. So it is the time to go back to the nature and find the solution in a natural way. Holistic approach of medicine deals with this aspect. All holistic medicines concentrate on the physical as well as energy part. Few of us claim that the sciences related with the energy part are only holistic sciences. Ironically speaking, the sciences which look at the world in a way that things are conjugated with each other in the definitions of energy and matter are truly holistic sciences. Holistic health: Live a life full of energy
We all are rich materialistically and poor energetically. More then vitamin and mineral deficiencies we are suffering from deficit of energies.
Have we used all of our energies?
Can we borrow these energies from somewhere?
Can any one locate a store from where we can recharge our senses?
Is there any resource to get these energies? You have answers for these with yourself. You are a big hub of energies in yourself, what you need is to identify your energies and to enlighten these. If these will remain latent and stagnant, these are useless. Energy is that what flows, let your energies to flow. These should be interchanged with the cosmic energies. Once you will start doing this your energy level will be higher automatically. How to practice: Holistic health
There are the following ways to interact with the energies of the cosmos –
Use of sanctified herbs- Trees are blessed with nature’s all energies as these are exposed to all natural energies, without any hindrances. So by using specific herbs for the promotion of the in-vitro of body, one can attain better health. Rasyanas told in Ayurveda are made up of such blessed herbs only and one can revitalize all the energies by proper use of Rasyanas
By practicing the Yoga exercises in daily routine, according to the one’s body type and requirements.
Punctuation of life in accordance to the needs of life.
By help of an expert who, can lead us to the right way.

It is used to effectively treat arthritis, ageing, general weakness, paralysis etc. ‘Pizhichil’ and ‘Sarvangadhara’ are technically the same.’Pizhichil’ literally means ‘squeezing’. Here, warm medicated oil is squeezed over the patient’s body from a piece of cloth that is periodically dipped in a vessel containing the oil. In Sarvangadhara, oil is poured over the patient’s body from pitchers. Pizhichil requires a lesser quantity of oil when compared to Sarvangadhara. Before beginning Pizhichil, a suitable type of oil should be applied to the head and body of the patient. In some cases, a talam is also applied on the head and bandaged with leaves. The masseur usually begin by squeezing oil on to the shoulders and then down the hands of the patient who sits in an upright position. Each masseur uses on hand to pour the oil while massaging with the other.Pizhichil is recommended for diseases caused by a vitiation of the Vata humour-Pakshaghata (Hemiplegia), paralysis and muscle spasms – and other degenerative diseases that affect the muscles.NJAVARAKIZHI' is a whole body massage using medicated milk-porridge made into a bundle. It is an immuno-enhancing rejuvenation therapy and is made use of in convalescence period of injury and trauma, muscular wasting, arthritis, general weakness, paralysis etcSIRODHARA is a unique treatment where specific medicated oils are used to bathe the head in a regular stream for a definite period. It is an effective therapy for mental relaxation and cures insomnia, stress, depression, decreased mental agility etc. When medicated buttermilk replaces oil (sneha), the therapy is called Takradhara. If medicated milk is used instead of medicated oil, then the process is called.SHIROVASTHI is considered more of a palliative (Shamana) treatment than an eliminative (Shodhana) one. The treatment is usually preceded by oleation (Snehana) and sudation (Swedana)A leather sleeve of about six to eight inches in length is placed on the shaven head of the patient and a band (vartti) tied around the forehead to keep it in place. Kneaded dough is used to line the inside of this sleeve and ensure that it does not leak. Oil is then poured into the sleeve and allowed to remain on the head for a while. The oil commonly used is Ksheerabala or Dhanwantaram. The length of time the oil should be kept there is determined by the severity of the disease. Usually it is up to fifty minutes for diseases caused by severe Vata disorders. This treatment is prescribed for disorders like facial paralysis, cataract, deafness, earache, insomnia and other diseases that afflict the cranial nerves. ABHYANGAM is otherwise known as Uzhichil where medicated oil is used to massage the body with specific implications to the 107 vital points (marmas) of the body. It helps to give better circulation, muscular tone, mental tranquility and better health maintenance.ELAKIZHI is an innovative classical massage with medicated leaves and is used to tackle joint pain, muscle cramps, stress and arthritis .All the above-mentioned treatments can be done in a perfectly healthy person as well so as to enhance his/her immunity, vitality and longevity of life. The above treatments can be offered in different combinations according to the physician’s direction. Healthy living

Yoga: Healthy living
Yoga is derived from the word “Yuj”. It means to add, to sum up and to connect. Yoga is a way to connect and to add the internal and external energies. When things get connected flow of energy is enhanced and gets regularized. Energy is best in a flowing mode. Not in a stagnant mode. Stagnancy brings incapability in expressiveness, makes things complicated and puzzled and leads to sedative stages. Today, we all are facing problems caused by this impairment of flow of energies and facing the problems of depression, anxiety and unhappiness.
Another meaning of Yoga “Chitta Vruti Nirodhah” means- to control the senses and the uncontrolled movements of Psycho. Concentration is a main aim here through Yoga. Concentration is a direct mode of consciousness. Only he can concentrate who is conscious. Yoga is designed to concentrate but this concentration is not full of selfishness. Yoga asks to concentrate on the cosmic energies. This helps one to bind with the cosmic energies easily. Once, one is in touch with the outer-cosmic energies influx of energies starts by themselves. Energy tends to flow from higher to lower potentials. No doubt! Cosmic energies are richer and these start to flow inside and a person starts to enjoy this flow and enriches with the higher energy levels with the time.
Yoga is considered as few postures only these days. But it is not so. Practicing postures and making body stronger and flexible is important to start with the yoga. Yoga needs a greater patience and stamina. We have mistaken the divine concepts of yoga and thinking the first beginning step as a final one.

Eight limbs of Yoga
1Yam
2Niyam
3Aasnas (postural exercise)
4Pranayam( breathing exercises)
5Pratyahara(strengthening senses)
6Dharna(concentration-1st level)
7Dhyan(2nd level of concentration)
8Smaadhi(final goal)

This approach has different attitudes, these are –
  1. Considers man as a whole, comprising body, mind (Psycho) and Consciousness (Spirit).
  2. Beside this subtle approach, they took the whole body as a subjective matter not objective. All systems and organs are interrelated with each other. Here specialization is approached to the complete body not to its parts.
  3. It has another approach, beyond an individual. An individual is thought in the context of universe. Universe and an individual are just same to each other. Man is a unit of universe.
After looking at these concepts, it becomes clear that Ayurveda falls in the same category. Ayurveda covers all these points completely. Holistic health: Need of time
Today, the problems we are facing are less physical and more psychological.

  • Have we used all of our energies?
  • Can we borrow these energies from somewhere?
  • Can any one locate a store from where we can recharge our senses?
  • Is there any resource to get these energies?
You have answers for these with yourself. You are a big hub of energies in yourself, what you need is to identify your energies and to enlighten these. If these will remain latent and stagnant, these are useless. Energy is that what flows, let your energies to flow. These should be interchanged with the cosmic energies. Once you will start doing this your energy level will be higher automatically.

How to practice: Holistic health
There are the following ways to interact with the energies of the cosmos –
  2. By practicing the Yoga exercises in daily routine, according to the one’s body type and requirements.
  3. Punctuation of life in accordance to the needs of life.
  4. By help of an expert who, can lead us to the right way.

AYURVEDIC-DIET

We all know that for healthy living we require a balanced diet constituted of protein, carbohydrates and fats, minerals ,vitamines etc.
Ayurveda has considered about the diet in detail. The Ayurvedic diet is one that not only nourishes the body, but also restores balance of 'Tridoshas' wich is very much essential for maintaining Health. Depending on our dosha, or constitutional type, some foods can be beneficial, and others should be avoided. These same foods may have the opposite effect on another dosha. The science of Ayurveda teaches that right diet is the foundation of healing. For maximum health and vitality, the ideal diet is one that balances our doshas.
Here we are recommending foods to balance each of the three doshas.
VATA DOSHA
The qualities of vata are cold, dry, light, hard, and rough.
VATA PACIFYING FOODS:
General :
excess vata can be counterbalanced with nutritive and tissue-building foods that are warm, moist, heavy, soft and oily, as well as foods with a sweet, sour and salty taste. For example, vata pacifying foods include ghee, soft dairy products, wheat, rice, corn and bananas. A person with a vata constitution should favor foods like hot cereal with ghee, hearty soups and vegetables, and whole cooked grains and chapatis. Spicy foods are generally okay for vata. Vegetables : Asparagus, beets, carrots, cucumber, green beans, okra (bhindi), onions and garlic , radishes, sweet potatoes, turnips. Fruits : Bananas, coconuts, dates, mangoes, melons, peaches, all sweet fruits in general.
Grains : Oats, rice and wheat
VATA AGGRAVATING FOODS:
General : Foods with the vata qualities, such as crackers, frozen desserts, and large amounts of raw vegetables and salads, will aggravate vata. Also, refined foods such as white flour and sugar, have light and dry qualities and would be best avoided by people with vata constitutions.Pungent, bitter, astringent; light, dry, cold foods, stimulants like smoking, alcohol, junk food, sugar, tea (esp. long leaf teas and green tea), brown rice. Vegetables : Cabbage, cauliflower, celery, brinjal, leafy green vegetables, mushrooms, peas, peppers (simla mirch) potatoes, sprouts, tomatoes, zucchini (tori). If you do have these vegetables cook them in pure desi ghee or unrefined til oil. Tomatoes are best avoided except as a small addition to salads. Fruits : Apples, pears, pomegranates. Spices: Vatas can have almost all spices and herbs in moderation When there is aggravated Vata, the following are to be taken with caution : coriander seeds (dhaniya powder), fenugreek (methi seeds), saffron, turmeric, parsley. Avoid too much hot, dry spices such as dried chili, which will aggravate dryness.
PITTA DOSHA
Pitta's properties are hot, sharp, oily and light.
PITTA PACIFYING FOODS:
General : you can balance excess pitta with foods that are cool, dry and heavy with a mild, naturally sweet, bitter or astringent taste. For example, milk, rice, beans, steamed vegetables and fruit are good for pitta people. Mild spices like cumin, coriander and cilantro are particularly beneficial for pitta. Sweet, bitter, astringent; cold, heavy, dry. Moderation, coolness, ghee, coconut oil, olive oil, green coriander (dhaniya), coriander seeds, cardamom, sprouts and raw foods. Vegetables & Fruits: can eat most vegetables and fruits. Exceptions are given below.Grains : Barley, oats, wheat, parboiled rice.
PITTA AGGRAVATING FOODS:
General : pungent and oily foods such as curry, fried foods and spicy condiments, as well as spices such as cayenne, garlic and dry ginger, should be avoided by pitta constitutions. Pungent, sour, salty, hot, light, oily. Stimulants like smoking, alcohol, coffee, pickles, vinegar, fried foods, spicy foods, fermented foods, curds, almond, corn, til, mustard oil. Vegetables : Beets, carrots, brinjal, garlic, hot peppers, onions, spinach, tomatoes. Fruit : Sour and unripe fruits. If there is aggravated Pitta avoid grapefruit, papayas, peaches, bananas, apricots.Grains : Brown rice, corn, millet, rye.
KAPHA DOSHA
The qualities of kapha dosha are cold, heavy, liquid and unctuous.
KAPHA PACIFYING FOODS:
General : To balance kapha dominance, eat smaller amounts of food and emphasize food with vata properties of light and dry. Also, foods which are dry, hot or sharp are recommended, so look for foods with pungent, bitter or astringent tastes. Examples include puffed cereals such as puffed rice or corn; small, astringent grains, such as millet, amaranth, and quinoa; and light, bitter vegetables such as leafy greens. Spices like ginger, turmeric and chili are generally good for kapha people.Favour : Warm light food, dry food cooked without much water, minimum of butter, oil and sugar, stimulating foods (ginger, chillies, pickles), raw foods, salads, fruits. Vegetables : Generally all vegetables are good, but if you are suffering from any kapha disorder like lung congestion, congestive asthma, sinuses, obesity, heart disease, diabetes, high cholestrol, then avoid all sweet juicy vegetables such as cucumbers, pumpkin family, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, tori, ghiya etc. Fruits : Apples, apricots, pears, pomegranates, dried fruits in general (apricots, figs, prunes, raisins) Lentils & Legumes : If the dosha is not aggravated all except tofu and kidney beans are acceptable. Spices : All are good - ginger is best for improving digestion, turmeric is excellent for drying out the mucous, chillies are excellent for removing mucous.
KAPHA AGGRAVATING FOODS :
General : Foods such as dairy products, wheat, avocados and oils have these qualities and will increase kapha in the body. Sweet, sour, salty; heavy, oily, cold. Desserts, sweets, ice cream, deep fried foods, possessiveness, miserliness, laziness. Vegetables : all sweet juicy vegetables such as cucumbers, pumpkin family, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, tori, ghiya etc. Fruits : All sweet juicy fruits in general.Lentils & Legumes : Tofu and kidney beans.Spices : excess salt.

VATA PITTA AND KAPHA

This universe is run by three types of forces namely kinetic force, potential force and the force acting as stimulant for either of these. These forces are represented in our body in the form of three Doshas. ‘Doshas’ here means the forces those can disturb the body when these are not in balance. These three Doshas are named as Vata, Pitta and Kapha. These three represent the whole metabolism going on in the body.
Kinetic force has the ability to bring about the changes in the subject matter where ever it is applied. This force is represented in our body by Vata. Etymologically ‘Vata’ means “that which moves things.” In the absence of Vata other two forces are considered to be lame, incapable to bring about any change. It also governs our sensory and mental balance and orientation, and promotes mental adaptability and comprehension.
Potential force in our body is Kapha. Etymologically Kapha means “that which holds things together.” It provides substance and gives support, and makes up the bulk of our body tissues. It also provides emotional support in life and governs such positive emotional traits as love compassion, modesty, patience, and forgiveness. In brief it is the on going anabolic process in our body. The stimulant for kinetic or potential force to be working is Pitta. Etymologically it means “that which digest things.” It is responsible for all chemical and metabolic transformations in the body. It also governs our mental digestion, our capacity to perceive reality and understand things as they are. Thus we can say Pitta represents the catabolic process going on in the body.

How Dosha evolves
Ayurveda considers each and every thing of this universe to be composed of five great elements (Panchmahabhootas). Same applies for Tridoshas besides this these have some elements in higher proportion than others and these are considered to be made of those elements in higher proportion.
Vata is composed of element air and ether. One of them is the working force and another provides the space for that force to be functional. But when there is less working force and space is greater, the change will hard to notice. While greater force in less space will result in destruction. So Vata is that force which maintains the equilibrium between air and ether element.
Pitta is considered to be composed of water and fire elements. But it is not possible for water and fire to exist together. One with higher potential will exist and other will vanish. Here Pitta comes in action. It is the force that makes water and fire to reside together. It is just like hot water or acids present in stomach as these are nothing more than fire in water.
Kapha consists of element water and earth. But practically these two can never mix with one another. Earth will sediment leaving the water clear. The force namely Kapha compels these two to stay together.

Five Universal Elements: Panchmahabhootas

Five Universal Elements: Panchmahabhootas
Today more than 100 elements have been detected by modern scientists. These are the basic elements like; hydrogen, carbon, sodium etc; which unite together to create all the beings, living or non living of our world. Presence of any one of these relative to other elements in any material will decide its physical and chemical qualities and its function in the ecological system of ours. According to Ayurveda everything in Universe is poised of the Panchmahabhootas – Aakash (Space or ether), Vayu (Air), Teja or Agni (Fire), Jala (Water) and Prithvi (Earth). These are mixed in countless varieties of relative magnitude such that each form of matter is distinctly unique. Although each element has a range of attributes, only some get evident in particular situations. Constantly changing and interacting with each other, they craft a situation of full of life flux that keeps the world going. This all happens under the control of TriGunas. In a simple, single living cell for example the earth element predominates by giving structure to the cell. The water element is present in the cytoplasm or the liquid within the cell membrane. The fire element regulates the metabolic processes regulating the cell. The air element is the gaseous part therein. The space occupied by the cell denotes the presence of ether, the Aakash
In the case of a complex, multi-cellular organism as a human being for instance, Akash corresponds to spaces within the body (mouth, nostrils, abdomen etc.); Vayu denotes the movement (essentially muscular but nervous system also); Agni controls the functioning of enzymes (intelligence, digestive system, metabolism); Jala is in all body fluids (as plasha, saliva, digestive juices); and Prithvi manifests itself in the solid structure of the body (bones, teeth, flesh, hair et al)The Panchmahabhootas therefore serve as the foundation of all diagnosis and treatment modalities in Ayurveda and has served as a most valuable theory for physicians to detect and treat illness of the body and mind successfully

Basics of Ayurveda

Basics of Ayurveda
Ayurveda is a scientific art to live a healthy life. This is a tradition of health. The tradition started from the creator of earth himself, Brahma and went up to many holy souls, who were the one’s who had freed themselves of all worldly desires by means of spiritual endeavors and acquiring the gift of universal knowledge. This understanding embraces the past, present and future and is till today pure and timeless. The principles are derived from universal laws of nature that have changed little through time. These principals were settled through subjective, objective, and intuitive approaches to gain knowledge, incorporated with a deep understanding of the unseen intelligence of the universe. The practices of Ayurveda have withstood the test of time. Basic Principles of Ayurveda comprise of:

About Ayurveda

About Ayurveda
Etymologically Ayurveda has two word- Ayu and Veda. Ayu means life and Veda stands for the knowledge. So strictly speaking Ayurveda is knowledge for life. For what this knowledge is? What is the aim of Ayurveda? Talking about both Paramount Scholars of Ayurveda- Charka and Sushruta has told that- Aim of Ayurveda is to prevent the diseases in a healthy person and to cure the diseased one. They have given these following definitions of Ayurveda-
Ayurveda is a science of life. It tells what is good and what is not for the healthy life.
A science dealing with the details about the life, its endurance and eminence is Ayurveda.
An eternal knowledge, aimed to cure the diseases of all creatures is Ayurveda.
Ayurveda is a science which tells us how to use foods, herbs and other natural resources for maintenance of health.
All natural things and their effect on body is where discussed that science is known as Ayurveda.
Where all ailments of body, psyche and consciousness are cured and made healthy is Ayurveda.
From these definitions it is clear that Ayurveda is a complete knowledge about life, how to live life in a healthy way and to achieve harmony with the nature.

Ayurveda- A Complete Science of Life
Welcome to read about the most ancient and traditional science on one of the most modern systems, the Internet. How can this ancient system of health care be relevant to people of today, when technological advances have radically altered our lifestyles, our environment and our medicine?
The principles of Ayurveda are an invaluable link to understanding, in detail, naturally healthy living. People everywhere are realizing the importance and benefits of taking personal responsibility for one's own well being, making Ayurveda the perfect system of health knowledge for today's world.
Ayurveda is a science of life so to know more about it, we must know what is life? Life according to Ayurveda is a combination of senses, mind, body and soul. So it is clear from this definition of life that Ayurveda is not only limited to body or physical symptoms but also gives a comprehensive knowledge about spiritual, mental and social health.
The words like soul and spirituality might sound outdated or create a negative thinking in some of you as they have no place in modern science. As soon as we hear about these topics, we become uncomfortable. Actually, I don't feel that it is our fault. No one has ever spoken about these things to us. We are always trapped in the attractions of outer material world to become happy and peaceful.
The modern society, education, culture and the television- everything speaks about materialism. If this was everything why is it so that most us are unhappy. There is unrest, anxiety, mental tension, fighting and terror every where despite best efforts being made to stop them. This is because some part of our body is not being nourished properly. Be open minded and try to understand. Read the next pages.

What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda literally means "science of life and longevity." and is considered to be the traditional system of medicine of India.
Ayurveda is a science in the sense that it is a complete system. It is a qualitative, holistic science of health and longevity, a philosophy and system of healing the whole person, body and mind.
The origin of this system goes back to a far past, in which philosophy and medicine were not separated. Therefore, philosophical views have strongly influenced the Ayurvedic way of thinking.

What is unique about Ayurveda ?There are several aspects to Ayurveda that are quite unique:
Ayurveda offers reference points for managing treatment decisions specific to each case. Ayurvedic theory is profoundly useful in analysing individual patient constitution and understanding variations in disease manifestation.
The Ayurvedic framework can be used to structure working models of the unique state of each patient, and to project a vision or goal for a whole state of health, again unique to each case.
Ayurveda offers specific recommendations to each individual on lifestyle, diet, exercise and yoga, herbal therapy, and even spiritual practices to restore and maintain balance in body and mind. Ayurveda sees a strong connection between the mind and the body, a huge amount of information is available regarding this relationship.
This understanding that we are all unique individuals enables Ayurveda to address not only specific health concerns but also offers explanation as to why one person responds differently than another.
